The device will work for a while and then eventually stop. I contacted one of the manufacturers and they said that since the device doesn't use a custom driver but works directly with OSX to call Apple.

I did. Apple said to call the manufacture. I too was hoping to find a way to restart the firewire bus but had no success. Anyway, I hope someone can post a solution because I could use it too! Have you tried some other cables? I managed a video lab at a high school and we went through at least one fireweire 6 pin to 4pin cable per computer per semester.
They would end up with some kink or something that made them flaky.

Thank god at the time apple was sending out one of those cables with every single mac, so the school had literally thousands of them. It's all in the cabling. Only Granite Digital Firewire cables are going to work reliably for audio at these lengths. I've had great success with one of these Calumet branded cables. I guess they've gone up in price. I'd definitely check your cables.

For a long while I was running 2 15' cables with the powered hub acting as a repeater. That worked as well, but was messy. That is quite a claim. How exactly are they superior to say, Monoprice cables? Post marked deservedly as spam. I don't think cablig quality has anything to do at least in my case, when the thing gets detected I have no trouble with audio dropouts, the interface disappearing, acting flakey or anything like that.
Also I made sure I got the best cable quality I could find they're custom made by a local company. I'll keep you guys posted. I can't say anything about their Firewire cables, and I have a lot of their products, but I can easily believe that Monoprice could have issues with certain cable requirements. How did you make the measurements? Pin configuration. I didn't do the test, I saw a situation where this cable model consistently failed to work with a video card and display but both devices worked fine with other cables and that was the answer I was given. I don't have the report handy to identify which pin it was.

If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.

Desktops Speciality level out of ten: It was a temporary solution to help with problem FW connections. If you shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes that's really all you need do to reset everything. It just removes power long enough to remove anything in memory that could be corrupted. Sort of similar to resetting PRAM in the event that something stored there became corrupted. Pretty much it's an old method that isn't available anymore because it no longer applies except to very old models. If you are having problems with FW devices then first check with their manufacturers' to see if they are still compatible with your running version of OS X.
Seek any firmware updates for the devices. Loading page content. You can't specifically reset the FW bus. Just restart the computer which resets everything.
