Is ableton for mac and pc
It can be a non issue depending on what software and hardware you use.
But as time goes by the possibility of something no longer working increases. I preferred using the macbook, the surface pro took some fiddling to get going, I had to create a special power profile to use the processor properly, because the default power optimisation setting it came with was not compatible with Ableton, and the simplest tracks would use up all the CPU, even though it was a i7!
But now i've got it working its fine, though there are still more bugs around audio drivers etc, than on the Mac, eg: No doubt I could figure it out, but its just a bit less smooth than on Mac OS. Touch screen is fun though, and its really barely any different when you get past the set up. The small form factor is great, like ableton on an iPad, but more powerful than the Air. I start to experience limitations: Do you think I'll be able to reach the same performances with a PC other a mac?
I almost never saw PCs when touring and I'm a bit afraid to cross the line Any thoughtful insight will be greatly appreciated. It's more about what a user is comfortable with and the sense of stability. Power and performance both options are about the same these days. Mac has always been a staple for pro end use because the hardware and software are designed together so this means from one machine to the next the operation and stability will be the same.
That is the main reason for it. DOes not always mean it is the best bang for buck. I am a Windows user, have been since Windows 3. Of course problems have arisen but at weird times, so when a lot of people had issues with Live 8. When many people had a perfectly fine time with Live But is MacOS better for Live? It's the same as my 9. The pain moves around. It's pretty equal. Currently I'm running Live Neither of them have any real problems.
A couple of bugs on the beta, the usual stuff. So why do you see so many Mac laptops on the gigging circuit? Well Apple courted the creative market from the mid 90s where Microsoft focused on business. Most musicians became familiar with a ProTools rig, or a Logic setup on Mac. Windows 98 was greatly inferior to something relatively robust like System 7.
Then MacOS moved to a Unix core and only got more robust. Couple that with the exceptional structural design of the Apple laptops from to ish and compare those to the flexy plastic abominations on the PC market at that time Unfortunately it seems that we are now in the era of the "Clagnut". Apple have made good use of the creative sector in positioning the products as quality cool items, based on good engineering practices.
But as iPhone and iPad sales revenue dwarfed that of the Macbook Apple look to be stepping away from supporting creatives with good products Hence the "what's a computer?

But that can change. Many video editors jumped ship a few years back, and that is a weird thing to be saying. Telling an editor in that they'd one day prefer a WindowsOS for a working environment would be laughable. But here we are. Not to say Windows or Microsoft is "amazing", but Apple seem to be digging themselves a hole and shitting in it for no reason.
But I've seen older threads from like , , etc.
Do you use Windows or Mac OS X as OS for Live? - Ableton Forum
I'm curious with today's technology in laptops and computers what is the comparison like between a MAC and PC for running Ableton. Now obviously they both are capable of running this software properly, especially the low end models built these days. But what are some of the niggling downsides and cool upsides between these two? I just was looking for a revisited comparison with s technology in computers. I have a feeling going pc might be my option for a laptop, due to how powerful and affordable they've become are. Plus there are some with double the storage space then a macbook pro.
But why do artists still go for macs? Especially now with the new macbook that no longer has USB. You haven't used windows 10 have you? All of these drivers issues you talk about don't exist anymore except in rare cases. With the windows 10 anniversary edition you now have access to a bash shell and run Linux commands. They have significantly bridged the gap and have much more powerful hardware available.
I have had nothing but great experiences using Win10 for music production so far. So much so, that when I upgraded my laptop, I switched to PC. Windows makes major UI changes at least every other version. OS X has maintained the same basic look and layout since the very first version. PC may have a whole spectrum of available hardware and it may even be faster and more powerful, but this comes at the cost of compatibility issues. Mac computers have a closed ecosystem so the OS is designed for specific, limited hardware causing fewer issues.

For the most part, Macs are stable and consistent and reliable with a smooth, efficient user experience that doesn't get in the way. That's what most artists want in a computer. Windows 10 is rock solid. True but as Windows 10 is officially the last version Microsoft will ever make that's not a problem anymore.
What are we looking for?
Actually the update philosophy of OS X would worry me more right now because in my experience with each new release, hardware drivers and software tend to be buggy or stop working altogether until patched. That tended to be true in the past but I haven't encoutered issues like that in a long time. If you follow basic compatibility principles and limit yourself to proven hardware manufacturers with solid drivers you should never encounter any issues.
At least I haven't. If all else fails, you can just buy a cookie-cutter build that has been thoroughly tested and is cookie-cutter and popular for a simple reason: It just works. This I don't. Did you know that USB condenser mics don't work in Windows 10? Even though they used to work perfectly fine in older versions. They're sure getting their shit together, but I assure you, NOT there yet.
Though, I should add that MS is progressing at an exponentially faster rate than Apple. It stays the same. It works. Though I feel that with each release since Snow Leopard Apple takes away stuff from me but doesn't give anything in return.

There's not even one feature added since then that improved my daily usage or software development workflow. Playing devil's advocate here: It's important for daily use but is it really worth it when you just make your Ableton fullscreen and forget about the host OS? Current state of Mac ecosystem is not ideal. Battery capacity dropped with newest generation. If you work on the go there's the dongle hassle. It's probably not as good as MacBook but if you hinges start to squeak you can buy another one and go only slightly over the one MacBook price.
It's also true that Apple provides stable drivers for the hardware they build and other vendors from music industry audio interfaces, controllers do the same knowing Mac is first class citizen in this industry. Ableton did crash on me couple of times but mostly because of some shady plug-ins. I'm wondering if notion about Ableton's subpar stability on Windows doesn't come from people torrenting s of cracked VSTs. Currently my thinking is: If deadmau5 can maintain stable Windows so can I. I'll be using Linux for everything else I do. He mentions how uber expensive his windows computer is, yet there are various times he's swearing at it because it can't do basic shit without bogging down.
I run a Macbook and run it hard. Real hard. My dogs pissed on it. It's been dropped and whatever else. No way. I don't believe you. This simply can't be true. Why would anyone want an ecosystem where you can choose from a wide range of hardware based on your needs and budget. I've run maxed out iMac, maxed out 15" MacBook Pro, maxed out 15" MacBook Pro, maxed out 15" Macbook Pro, maxed out 15" MacBook Pro and latest maxed out 15" Macbook Pro, probably some other and I loved them all, they worked beautifully for me.
PCs are garbage? They cost ? What fucking rock have you been living under? PCs CAN cost If your a fucking cheapskate. It runs Ableton like a dream, and eats up all the software a write for my research. PCs are definitely harder to set up. But with a bit of work you can make a PC that will shit on every Mac out there. Macs are more of the buy it without needing to think at all.
Which I respect, if that's what your looking for. Some of us has more specific needs and usage scenarios, so PC or Linux are our only options. On the windows machine, it sometimes crashes, or fails to load the ASIO driver without a system restart. There's a strange glitch whenever I export that it tries to export twice at once. Sometimes it takes ages to open the program for no apparent reason. I'm using mac instead of a pc because i like to make music wherever i go so i use a laptop and think apple's laptop trackpads are better than most pc ones, and i prefer CoreAudio over ASIO4ALL.
Cost, Macs are are alot more expensive than building your own computer. Even high end windows laptops cost way less than Macbook Pros. Hardware, right now, a lot of Mac hardware is seriously out of date, The Mac Pro hasn't had any updates since its release in and the current iMac is 2 years old.
People are starting to feel that Apple no longer cares about it's pro level customers. In the end its personal preference. Windows machines can be beastly powerful DAW machines that can crush any current Mac system in terms of performance if you know a little about hardware, drivers and how to optimize it. On the other hands Macs are solid stable machines that a lot producers use because they just "work". Microsoft have really upped their game since the release of Windows 10 and are constantly adding great updates.
I use Windows as my desktop machine as I like to build my own systems and use my MacBook Pro when on the road, projects work perfectly between the two systems Minus a few windows only VSTs I have. Core audio on Macs is great especially on the road because I can work as normal using my MacBook Pros built in sound card. With a Windows laptop you would definitely need to have an audio interface of some kind with you when on the road as ASIO doesn't perform well with build in sound cards.
Then your PC had something wrong with it. You should use a virus protection software when you download all that porn. Ahah my porn collection is virus safe Windows 10 is awesome.. I admit. But I still prefer macos. This guy gets it. Don't get me wrong, I make jokes and poke fun at the "PC vs Mac Wars," but at the end of the day I know that it's all about preference. People seem to get so pissed that the other exists, and don't realize that competition drives innovation. I am a Windows and Android guy, because I like customization, and developer friendly architecture read: But when my Mom needed a new smartphone, I got her an iPhone.
It's easier to use, for her. Everything from Apple is far too proprietary for my usage. That doesn't mean I think it's a bad platform. It just in no way caters to my usage. Windows 10 has forced major updates that can't be disabled officially you can fiddle with the registry settings but then you won't get even security updates. With Mac, you are not forced to update to new major versions of the OS.
That is a signifact plus for anyone who values stability. It's just been stereotypical that macs are for arts video editing and music Any machine to this date with capable hardware will run ableton efficiently. Jesus Christ some of this is so biased. Like of course your Macbook pro will run ableton better than your HP desktop.
Any complaint about slow load times is due to a low quality hard drive, not because it's running windows. An SSD will remedy that problem instantly.
Which OS do you use to work with Ableton Live or which is your favourite if you use several?
I don't know what people are talking about with drivers, I've only had to dig into drivers for my gpu granted I don't use a lot of external peripherals that get plugged in and out a ton, maybe that's a source of issues. People saying the ui always changes confuses me, the basic desktop has remained pretty much the same with a few visual changes admittably windows 8 fucked that up for a bit, but 8. When I load up asio I've never had any issues, I can think of one time where it's crashed. Ableton itself crashing is rare too, I think it's only happened to me like 3 times assuming shutting down with it running isn't considered a crash.
They're basically the same for ableton, there's not much of a difference between either experience. The hardware is a much bigger factor here. I don't really get any bugs with it, I run Ableton live lite 9. I understand that macbooks are way better in terms of reliability but as long as you re not performing live a lot, you can live without one. Ya mac user here for few years now with ableton running on it user experience has been fluid for me. And have seen my friends running Ableton on windows with lot task more to do than on any base mac systems that run all the task much better than PC for sure.
I don't get why some people are still using the "just works" scam Apple came up with over a decade ago. I personally use both PC and Mac for stuff ranging from audio editing, through to video editing, photo editing, graphic design, etc.
