Apparently when Bitperfect is on, it controls the signals through the DAC and when it is off I can control it regularly.

That's a shocker to me but that is the apparent cause. Jan 8, 8: I received an email from Bitperfect and as suspected it is the culprit as apparently it uses what is called "hog" mode, so it takes completely over the sound system in the Mac, so everything dealing with sound output has to go through Bitperfect.
