Mostly I can't get the software to recognize the cameras.

I've tried a couple of free tethering software packages. I just don't get a live, on the computer monitor scene.

Using Studioteather, I've been able to tether so close as to take a snapshot using my mouse as a remote and even a second or two later see the automatically uploaded image, but nothing that is "live". Just as a note, I do not have Lightroom, yet Studiotether still recognized I had something and was able to take a snapshot. What could be done is have a live-view with the mini-hdmi and a hdmi interface on the computer.
And use the usb for tethering sending the pics to the computer. I tried tethering in lightroom 3,3 did not recognize camera.

OS X' built-in Image Capture app has the ability to remote control your camera through the USB port and even do time lapse triggering , but it doesn't have live view Flux Aperture 8 years ago. I found out the other day that Aperture 3 supports very limited tethering for the D You can initiate focus and hit the shutter release from the computer but it doesn't give you real time viewing thru the lens prior to taking a picture.
