I'd rather not do that, but instead try to teach my Mac to read the files as they are; when I transfer them to a Windows machine here with the "Windows XP Language Interface Pack" instaled , the Cyrillic text shows up and I can even enter and edit cyrillic text.

Switch between Cyrillic and English simply by depressing the Caps Lock key. The fonts are arranged according to the Apple Cyrillic Standard, which is the arrangement of Russian Macintosh fonts.
