Mac snow leopard install blue screen

It actually turned off and started up with the apple, no chime, gray spinning screen, blue screen and then desktop. Not sure it downloaded. Went back to trying to get the other 17 updates downloaded and the mac just goes to an empty desktop until I turn it off and restart. It will restart with no chime, gray screen and apple with a gray twirling, then blue screen and then desktop.

So where do I go from here? This what happened before. I think because I could not restart with updates, it finally just would not start up anymore and just stopped at blue screen. I tried downloading updates while in safe mode booting with shift key, but no luck. Is there anything else that may be wrong?

I suppose I need the downloads before upgrading to Yosemite? It's my only choice I think, though I'd like to go back to Mavericks.
