Click it unless you really do want to write zeros, which can take a LONG time. Your drive will now be unmountable! Nothing you suggested worked. Why does Apple make things so bloody difficult?

I do hope it works for you. I got this error on an external FireWire drive that is used primarily for backing up my iMac. I powered the drive off and powered it on again and it mounted. I attempted to use the drive but it was damaged. I used the command line:. To force the unmount of the disk, and now First Aid is proceeding. Name required. Mail will not be published required.

All these answers don't really apply to your initial question. Yeah its stupid really. Apple have removed the actual disk drives from the display. You will see a "View" option - click this and select the option to display the actual drives. Then select the physical drive you want to format and it will work. Communities Contact Support. Sign in. I buy this my passport -seems tougher. Of course -Cant get it to format. Highly laughable from not having the drives pre-formatted for Apple to horrible instructions on how to do it. Should have stayed with Lacie. I have a My Passport Ultra. I am using a Macbook running El Capitan. My conclusion is the drive is bad.
