If you want backups go with Backblaze and similar solutions. But watch out if you're using typical Apple backup solutions a la Time Machine. It's not perfect and it's definitely not for everyone but I find it safer than screwing around with Apple's god forsaken protocols.

So buying a Synology, configuring it in like 10 minutes, and forgetting about it is a freaking godsend. You don't need a hackintosh as you have enough machines already.

Add Server if you need if for something specific. I ran a Synology 5x2 TB for a couple of years but can't see the advantage unless you have many users or want a particular Synology feature. I didn't and found the setup fiddly and a bit arcane when I played with them. The disadvantage is you have another operating system to maintain. I had troubles with Time Machine on Synology but that's settled down now.

Mine wasn't reliable at all ate hard drives until Synology eventually replaced it but that was probably just bad luck. Anyway went back to DAS as iit's much faster on the local machine and generally less hassle on everything else. The rest of my internet travels are pretty basic, and my internet service is not the speediest. But now that you mention it I have been thinking of making my travels on the net much more secure so I am sure I will evaluate this situation soon.

Thanks for all the advice! I just went back to a NAS a qnap after using a mac mini with esata external enclosure. In recent months it sometimes just disconnected, requiring a hard reboot of both the headless mini and the enclosure. I never got crashplan to work from it to an Internet webdav target , but time machine has worked well from the qnap, mini with server and time capsule.

Having the qnap makes it easier to see the status of the disks, manage it over the network a web interface beats screen sharing , it's faster, smaller and uses less power. I am very happy to be rid of the DAS. How quiet is that enclosure? Can you hear it while watching TV?
