Power mac g5 firewire ports not working

There are alternative ways, but it will be more complex. I found this while researching my own Firewire problems on my Jan G5 1. I noticed that a fresh install of TechTool 5 showed the firewire bus dead. I tried all the above solutions and got nothing. When nothing else worked, I tried the What the heck, right? Well, this time, I noticed that the settings on my re-set as the G5 booted up I had meant to disconnect it but forgot.

I've been using a quad core g5 in my studio for about a year with an RME Fireface Firewire audio interface. No problems whatsoever, until last week when I started experiencing audio cutting in and out. This was extremely bad timing; my client had just arrived in town from overseas to finish up his record with me.

At first I suspected the Fireface which was constantly going in and out of Host mode error mode whenever the audio would cut out. I tried rebooting several times, resetting the P-RAM, reparing permissions, all the regular tricks with no luck.

It wasn't until I tried hooking the Fireface up to my old faithful G4 that I realized the unit itself wasn't at fault here. The G4 gave the Fireface no grief at all, so this is when I started suspecting the Firewire ports of the G5.

The next day I hooked the Fireface back up to the G5 and was able to use it all day trouble free therefor assuming that the problem had gone away. The following day the problem was back again and worse than ever with audio cutting in and out about every 5 to 10 seconds. Up until this point I was only using the Firewire ports and all three were screwing up, so I went out and bought a Firewire cable so that I could test the Firewire port. I guess I assumed that the Firewire port would be on a separate bus, but I experienced the exact same problems.

So in my case it's not that the built in Firewire bus had died completely, it just became annoyingly intermittent and hard to troubleshoot. Ultimately I ended up getting a PCI firewire card and everything's working again. Now I'm just waiting for the coolant to leak out the back and cause the whole tower to explode! My G5 Firewire ports all failed.

All of sudden my g5 front Firewire port is not working. I have no problem with the front USB port. Please help. My Mac G5 does have 1 firewire and 1 USB port in the front and, as earlier indicated, the firwire front is not working.

Here's a new development, the flashdrive is no longer being recognized from the keyboard USB port nor from the front USB port of the G5. I've had this happen on my G5 Mac Pro dual 2. I could not get the front firewire or USB ports to operate. A couple of months later, and after some system updates, I forgot that the ports were not working and plugged a flash drive in. The port worked fine. I then tested the firewire port and it was working.

What to do if bus-powered FireWire devices don't appear in menus or behave correctly. FireWire slow or unresponsive when using bit Microsoft Vista. Power-on the FireWire drive before starting up or booting your Mac.

Reset the power-management chip in your Mac. While this advice applied particularly after installing the Mac OS X Try a different FireWire port. This may provide additional diagnostic information.
