I'm just saying there are some advantages to Macs in some regards. I agree with you. I'm just saying that something like that isn't a real solution. If you have to dual boot on a PC, but a Mac can do it natively, the Mac would be better for that particular task. Not for everything, but for that one thing. Not really. He's just saying it's easier to do. That is a somewhat valid reason, though with the number of Unix based Linux distros available I'm not really sure it holds up to the cost argument. Some people just favor design over raw performance especially if all you are doing is basic web surfing and word processing.

It's really just up to the user and what they are looking for. Clearly it isn't completely redundant to buy a mac as most of my classmates I've seen so far at a university of almost 40, overwhelmingly have them compared to other laptops. This is brand language though. It has little to do with what you're buying in terms of price to performance. POSIX compat is why I prefer it to Windows certainly, but people who care about that sort of thing are a decided minority. And let's be honest, brew is shit. Microsoft has been trying to battle this via marketing, but many people but them because they assume they're the best.

Social status, it's shiny, and most people need really over priced computers for: For me personally Macs just work. I've never really had any problems with Macs and I can't say the same for PCs. A lot of good points here, but it also depends on field.

I went to a conference recently for my field, and about 95 out of the academics there were using a Mac. The few who weren't were some of the programmers. When most people in your field use one particular brand of something usually because universities give them that , it becomes more of a hassle to use anything else. Transferring documents and presentations between computers can be a nightmare if one is a Mac and the other a Windows or Linux distro.

So a Mac is really the most logical step for me, and the university will subsidize a Mac where they wouldn't anything else, so it's cheaper for the same specs as well. I also have a custom build at home for personal use, but my work computer will likely always be a Mac. May as well get used to it.

Apple is really good at getting people to cultishly worship products that look pretty, but don't perform well enough to justify the price. That's why. I have a Windows Surface Pro 3. I really really like it but it can sometimes be annoying. I've had it for about four months now and I use it to take notes for school. Recently though the pen sometimes stops working which is really frustrating.

It works decently for typing notes too. I got mine because it's very light. Carrying a laptop around campus that weights a lot isn't fun. I had the same debate with myself and here's what I found. I think a Mac is worth the money because: It's pretty much immune to viruses 2. It has a long lifetime I've had mine 5 years and counting. There are ways to make a Mac more affordable. You can get a refurbished version for less, Apple sometimes does Back to School deals, or you can go with the cheapest model, which i think is a Mac Air.

I've had my MacBook Pro since and it's a little slow but works fine otherwise. Just saying.

Macs are easier to maintain , less viruses and less problems. Biggest issue would be if there is specific software needed that only runs on windows. However if you have a Mac you can get virtual box or parallels for Mac which can run windows and then you can run that software. Also there are less gaming options, and your first year you probably want to be more focused on school and growing personal relationships with others rather than playing video games alone in your room I did this and it worked for me and it encourages you to get out of your room.

I'm bringing my PC I built this year sophomore since I have a good idea of how the whole college thing works and have a solid friend group. Also, College Pro Tip if you live in the dorms, check if your dorm has Ethernet ports to connect to the wifi. It will have much better speeds. If you've on a budget, I recommend a Chromebook. I love it for school.

Incredibly cheap you can find excellent ones for or less , light, long battery life, and the ability to run Linux means it's great for programming and heavier applications. I personally believe they are various components that go into to why many purchase a MacBook over a PC. For one, many grew up in that particular ecosystem, making them more inclined to purchasing a MacBook. As the learning curve would be less steep and arduous. I've had the same Macbook air for 4 years now and it still works great. I just started my first semester at a CC and downloaded a lot of new programs and it never gives me any problems in doing my work.

Only downside is probably not having PowerPoint, MS Office for free but there are albeit inferior alternatives so I'm not complaining. It's also really light and portable, perfect for bringing to campus. Also, pc users gonna get on my ass for this but it looks good lmaooo. The war between apple and non-apple users will never end. The only type Mac vs PC needs to be a concern is if you plan to get into the art world or work for Apple development. Apple is also now trying to push some of its own coding like Swift and those looking to develop in such languages would be wise to learn this.

Anything outside of these two reasons however is just a matter of flavor and popularity. Use what is most affordable and is going to get the job done if all you are using it for are taking notes. If you are playing games on it when taking it home, its more understandable to want a PC, but would be a pain in the butt to lug around.

Macs do offer very cheap and light weight options which make them ideal for note taking. PC is catching up but Mac was normally the king in this regard. I feel like I missed properly answering this. The reason why so many use one over the other is either because they need a specific kind for their classes or it was simply what they were provided by one deal or another. I think because they think Macs are so cool and don't want to put in the time to find a good computer. I know I've been tempted many a time to buy a Mac when I need computer because shopping specs can be stressful when you don't know what you need, but want a specific level of performance.

If you've got a professional IT department backing you up, that's one thing. But students generally don't. With a Mac, you get a brand well-known for it's reliability, you can normally find information online about common problems because the specific machine you have has such a large market presence compared to other specific machines and there are Apple stores everywhere if you need immediate service. That is well worth the price premium you pay. Unless you're in a situation where you can afford a throwaway computer like a Chromebook or you have specialized needs field researcher, high-powered systems that aren't met by the Apple line, effectively you're paying that extra money as a form of insurance on one of the most critical pieces of educational gear you have.

That being said, my suspicion is that most people buy them because they think they denote status. Because they think mac is better due to advertisement. Macs absolutely can do Microsoft office. And even better, all iWork applications are compatible with office files and can export to them, etc. Also, for everyone, if you have an edu email you can get Office for free. As a computer science major my answer is that they choose Mac because they don't know shit about which is actually better for your money.

As a student the last thing you want during final exams week is to waste time looking for an outlet all over campus most of them will be taken. A laptop with a long battery life is a must for a student. Windows laptops come with a wide range of choices in terms of battery lives. Apple will always have the edge on battery lfe. The MacBook Air and The MacBook Pro are known to be unbeatable for the battery life they provide while also having high performance laptops.

The fact that every component in a MacBook is optimized to seemlessly work with each other saves a lot of energy. If you plan on being away from a charger for more than 6 hours, you may be forced to find additional power options if you decide to go the PC route. Hands down. Who breaks down first?

What kind of student would like their laptop with all their study materials, software and possibly a few projects on it break down and gone during the middle of the semester? Even if you back it all up, who has time to do all of that and get a new laptop? Just look around you when you get to campus. How many students do you see holding up old and rusty MacBooks? A couple. How many 3 year old MacBooks do you see on Ebay for sale?

Again the reason is simple, a MacBook has better quality because Apple has control of the entire manufacturing process and everything will be more compatible with each other and less likely to break down. Freshman students can be really stubborn when you try to tell them to buy a light machine. They dont understand how important weight is for productivity until they make the mistake of buying a heavy laptop they wont even bring to school after the 1st month.

A Mac offers you with three: OSX, Windows and Linux. The most important feature for a student is how productive they can be with their laptop. How much work will they get done.
