I find dd for windows to be a bit slow for writing images back on to the drive etc. My question is: You should be able to set the start and end position for dd to line up the the start and end location of the partition in the file, but if you get things wrong it will be a mess, so I just use the first partition in the image to add files, or use SoftMac instead as described in section 5 of this entry.
