I was very much a nuby with this kind of word program, and I never did quite get the hang of everything. However, it didn't crash or stall as often as some of the others that I was using at the time also. Getting the tool bar buttons out and used is quite complicated.

It's packed with everything under the sun just about. It was helpful and very useful for me while I was in college as I often times had to write lengthy papers as an education major. I had many drafts and rewrites. As a grad student, part of my education was to be able to use and navigate around the internet and use the computer in an efficient manner. I'm glad that OpenOffice allowed me to "practice" using things that I don't normally use everyday like inserting links or anchors, placing frames or place holders, using tables etc.

Pros Allows saving under multiple formats on the Mac Cons no major negatives. Summary when I switched to the Mac from windows I had planned on using Apples own spreadsheet and wordprocessing apps. Go there for details on competing products and buying advice. The component programs make no concessions to the trendy ribbon interface, using only old-school menus and toolbars. Open Office has excellent compatibility with Office formats and can export to PDF from all three apps. By default, Open Office uses the Open Document standard for native files, but you can change it to save to Microsoft formats, and it can read and write existing Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files.
It does so flawlessly most of the time, even with complexly formatted documents like resumes and multi-column newsletters. Occasionally, it will hiccup as when it removed all the embedded images from a Word doc I had open.
But those instances usually only require minor tweaks to correct. You can also export files to PDF from all three programs.
