Based on what you wrote, It's not just Firefox or Thunderbird downloads that fail--I've since tried to download other software with the same frustrating response. I guess the source of the problem could be something else.

Speed Download could indeed be affecting things. Have you tried using Safari to see if the problem also occurs with it? You might also try to see if any of your preferences got corrupted.

Do not trash it. Then log off and log back on or re-start your Mac, if you prefer that. Try to download something to see if it works this time. If that works, then the file you moved to the desktop was damaged. You can safely discard it then. Aug Sat 12th 3: Middle England.
