I'm having a bit of trouble troubleshooting this, and thought you might have the same thing going on. I just talked to one of the iphone users, and when he pulls up his wifi network list, our internal secured wireless network is what he is connected to.

He said when he connected to it, it just prompted him for his network login and connected. Now I need to figure out how to prevent connections from these phones. It seems the authentication process is now ignoring the fact that the device must be in active directory in a policy attached OU , and in a specific security group.

OK, so I got it figured out and fixed on my network. It didn't have anything to do with OWA. The conditions work as AND statements, meaning they are all required in order to pass the authentication to the domain controller where it leases the IP address. To keep these devices from getting IP addresses through wireless, you must enforce machine authentication. I can simply create a new security group in Active Directory to allow certain users to use their devices.

We have a wireless infrastructure covering all 3 of our buildings.

At this point we do not have any security set on it. It is all wide open. Especially if your wireless allows people on to your file servers, etc. I would assume from listing that it's a Apple device and i have noticed very odd firewall listings for these and it has something to do with iTunes looking for a host of some sort.

Possibly related to that. Do you know were this thing is going after it connects? I agree with that. In fact I do MAC address filtering and have a lot of those devices filtered. MAC addresses are assigned to makers of networking products. The first 24 bits of he MAC address can be translated to a particular manufacturer. You can also ""spoof"" a MAC address, but that is separate issue.

Unknown MAC Address in DHCP

Since you preserved the MAC address you can trace it to a particular vendor; a little spent on research can be helpful in resolving the vendor which filter down the list to a few devices made by that vendor. There are other tools out there but the link below can used to provide proof o concept. I'm not sure what zenner is referring to about spoofed MAC addresses but there are a couple legitimate reasons why the first 24 bits of a MAC address may not match a registered vendor.

The following wiki as a decent discussion; http: A MAC address is 48 bits not 48 characters. Even a GUID is only 32 characters long. Try playing with Linux for a bit to get a better idea of what can be done. Windows is no place to learn. All MAC Addresses are hard-coded into a network card and can never be changed. However, you can change or spoof the MAC address in the operating system itself using a few simple tricks.

So why would you want to change your MAC address? Well there are many reasons for this, mostly related to bypassing some kind of MAC Address filter set on a router or firewall. There are other cases, I'll leave it where it stands. Act like I didn't even bring it up. It'll be simpler for all concerned. But at least the part between the dashes is 48 bits. Not sure what Vl1 means either. June 05, Good call on that sting being the hex of an ascii string. I have no idea why I can't seem to find that post.
