I can request that the user manually input the serial number, then upload it into GSX diagnostics. I load the diagnostic page in the background and if it comes back without error, I know the serial is valid and can save in keychain. That very well may work. Given the scope of my environment user base and user technology level I'm forced to remove human error as much as possible.

I agree with BrianLachoreVPI - your router likely logs a list of connected devices for more than an hour. My router at home is a time capsule. Where should I look for the log? As per this thread: It shouldn't be hard to figure out which device is your iPad - especially if it has a name associated with it. If it doesn't have the hostname sometimes devices don't seem to get registered this way , compared the MAC addresses in that list to the devices on your network. Having never used an Apple router in any form , I have no idea how devices are registered especially Apple devices so it might be quite easy to differentiate the devices in the logs.
