Mac mini server flashing globe
Same here. Sounds like this person has a Mac that can't find a system folder. And yeah, without a bootable external disk or a DVD it's not going to startup. Make your comment an answer and I will vote it up. I just went through this my self! Ian C. What if your Mac does not have a DVD drive?
Command + R not working - Grey Folder with Question Mark
Internet Recovery should be possible for all Macs without a physical drive. Except maybe the 1st revision Air? In which case, an external bootable USB should be possible. I have had to do a full reinstall from scratch on a 1st rev Air, I believe external bootable USB was the only solution I was able to make work. A folder with a question mark means your Mac can't find the system startup software.
How to Re-Install OS X with Internet Recovery on a Mac
With luck, it will be something simple. That shouldn't solve the problem, as safe mode requires that a working operating system be found, which isn't happening. Biju Biju 1. Sign up or log in Sign up using Google.
Flashing Globe when imac starts

Also, I'm able to use Flipside to restart automatically in Linux which is nice and this skips the network flashy globe thing I hope this helps.

I rebooted holding down the Option key. Normally, doing this would present a special screen showing all accessible bootable volumes. Instead of the Startup Manager, I saw a prompt to enter a firmware password. And then everything made sense.
Know better?
With such a password enabled, you or, more important from a security standpoint, another person cannot access any startup options, including changing the boot volume or activating any special startup modes. And the only way to provide your firmware password to get around these restrictions is, for Intel Macs, to hold down Option at startup —the same action you take to use Startup Manager.
Not only had I neglected to disable that password afterwards, but I'd completely forgotten it was even enabled.
Have you ever opened the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences, only to discover that no startup volume is selected? Why did the Mac mini start up successfully, avoiding the password, on the first boot—and only the first boot—after swapping the RAM? The moral of this story? And third, if you do enable a firmware password, don't forget doing so or forget the password, for that matter.
