And it is utterly compelling. There is a marked restraint about it. This is not the kind of charged, swaggering rock many eventually came to associate with Petty. The rhythm section is controlled and spacious, the groove pulses with electric piano and answering guitar licks, whilst backing vocals sigh and shriek, all creating a sinister atmosphere for a song of devotion. This is American rock and roll with a perfect new wave sensibility. And, like all Tom Petty songs, it has a great opening line that immediately draws you into the narrative: T he first great Petty anthem, it charges out of the speakers at a fantastic clip in a whirl of guitars and that stunning opening line: The chorus is the kind of thing you just have to raise your arms and yell along to: Oh yeah.
All right. It opens with a big chord as if in the band is already in full flight. The chorus, with its echoed, repeated phrase is hair-raisingly thrilling: Put the man out of his misery. He really needs to know. A short, perfect drum roll from Stan Lynch launches a huge swirl of organ and guitar.
It is a fantastic opening to a dark, highly charged anthem, in which Petty sounds like he is trying to drag a lost friend or lover out of self-defeating torpor. It is full of great lines: A blast of high spiralling guitars drop to a surprisingly slow drag. When it comes to pulling you into his story from the very first moment, Petty was the absolute master. P etty played with just about every great American star of the classic rock era that you can think of, from Bob Dylan to Bruce Springsteen.
But he had a special rapport with Stevie Nicks , the wild gypsy heart of Fleetwood Mac.
This was her first solo single, written especially for her by Petty and Mike Campbell. A very wonky, barely in tune synth plays over a slow, stuttering rhythm in this gorgeous, bittersweet kiss-off. It is an unusual little song that drags along, the melody spilling across the rhythm and binding it together. Petty is trying to persuade a lover not to leave him with a combination of threats and pleading, his sneer barely disguising the aura of emotional fragility.
It may not be pretty but it is a perfect summation of a side of human relationships most people will have experienced at one time or another.
