The icon will have a progress bar that runs horizontally across the bottom of it. This progress bar updates itself as the download proceeds, allowing you to monitor the how far along the download associated with that icon is without having to refer to the Downloads window in the Safari browser. This hint was submitted by someone else a while back, and I had accidentally deleted it from the queue So my apologies to the original submitter, whoever you are.
