May 9, As mentioned by many on here HD and Optical are the way to go. I use both. Time Machine to an network raid 5 array and optical backup. I think the HD option has been covered, but I will add my thoughts about optical. Most optical media will chemicals break down. Optical media should only be considered reliable for 5 years. This really puts it in almost the same boat as HDs except optical disks are fairly cheap. There is a optical disc that is truly designed for archiving.

M DISC and it is advertised with a shelf life of years. I say maybe and I will not be around to verify it. So I'm going to say this media is good for 50 years stored under household conditions out of sunlight. New optical technology has increased the data storage volume of a single disc to 3.

This SONY product is currently being targeted for commercial markets, but the good new is the or GB optical discs are affordable and have been made available to everyday consumers. I bought my optical drive at Best Buy, but they did not carry the GB discs.

Amazon has them in 5 or 10 packs for 10 to 20 US dollars per disc. I'm sure later the GB tech will become available to consumers at a affordable price. Another point to make is the optical disc drives have always been backwards compatible.
