Private internet access download for mac

A low-cost VPN with a pile of interesting features

It's not the friendliest interface, and it's not for the security novice. Your data enters that tunnel, and is thereby protected from spies, advertisers, and adversaries. VPNs also help to mask your identity, because the world at large can't see your real IP address. Instead, anyone trying to track your movements across the web will see the IP address of the VPN server. Because your data can't be monitored before it reaches the public internet, VPNs are excellent tools for accessing websites and content that may be blocked in your particular region.

For years, journalists and political activists have used VPNs for precisely this purpose. When you're not fighting for freedom, you can also use a VPN to spoof your location and access region-locked content. Just fire up the VPN, connect to a UK server, and you'll be sipping tea with your favorite "programmes" in no time. Though, if you do this, you should keep in mind that you're not helping to pay for the content you love. That's especially important, since Congress has given internet companies the green light to sell anonymized metadata about customers.

Although a VPN is an enormously powerful tool, it's important to understand its limitations. Attackers on the same network as you especially on public, unsecured Wi-Fi can't see your traffic, but your data is unencrypted once it leaves the VPN server for the public internet. Also, a VPN is not a true anonymization service like Tor, which routes your traffic through several intermediaries to confuse observers.

  7. Remember that, while you definitely need a VPN , there is no silver bullet for security, and a VPN is just one of many tools you should consider for protecting your online privacy and safety. That's great, as OpenVPN is fast, powerful, and open-source. The company does not offer a free version. That's an excellent value, and among the most affordable VPNs I've reviewed.

Private Internet Access accepts all major credit cards, AmazonPay, Bitcoin, and PayPal, as well as anonymous purchases through pre-paid gift cards from merchants like Target and Subway, and many more besides. If your budget can't support paying at all, there are many excellent free VPN services. You can also use a special Chrome plug-in to secure only your browser traffic. I took an in-depth look at the features available in Private Internet Access when I reviewed the Windows client.

You can read all about them in that review. In brief, however, Private Internet Access offers a great many features and tools that security wonks will appreciate.

Uninstall and reinstall Private Internet Access VPN on Mac

I'm glad to see this included in all of Private Internet Access' clients, but it's important to remember that these should work in parallel with, and not replace, security apps. Apps like Privacy Badger do an excellent job of blocking online trackers, and standalone antivirus software is a must-have. The most impressive aspect of Private Internet Access is the sheer size of its network.

The company offers 3, servers as of this writing, in many locations around the globe.

Thank you for choosing Private Internet Access!

No other VPN has even come close to the size of this network. NordVPN has a respectable server count at around 1,, but also includes specialized servers. These include servers for video streaming, double encryption, and even connecting to the Tor anonymization network via VPN. TorGuard VPN is a bit friendlier when it comes to torrenting, however. And it offers add-on purchases downloaders will appreciate, like "clean" static IP addresses and access to a high-bandwidth network.

You can also rest assured that Private Internet Access won't log your information. The company also does not inject ads into your web traffic, a tactic sometimes used by less scrupulous VPN services. Unlike many of the other Mac VPN services I reviewed, Private Internet Access had an actual, honest-to-goodness installer instead of just instructions to manually drag a file to my Applications folder.

Note that you must obtain the installer from the company's website, as the client is not currently listed in the official macOS App Store. When you're prompted to log in to the Private Internet Access VPN client, you have to use the username and password that were generated by the service and emailed to you. That's different from the credentials you probably created when signing up. It's confusing, and Private Internet Access doesn't handle it particularly well, but it's all in the name of privacy.

Having separate credentials ensures that the company can't tell which user is which, further protecting you from potential law enforcement investigations. Although housed in the familiar macOS window, the Private Internet Access client does not blend in with other apps. It's a spare, white window with fields for your username and password. More options are revealed by pressing the Advanced button at the bottom of the screen.

Aside from a lengthy list of servers housed in the menu bar, that's all there is to the interface. A spartan experience is par for the course with Private Internet Access clients. I know many security wonks that actually praise Private Internet Access for its design, or, rather, the lack thereof.

I disagree, and think that bad or nonexistent design telegraphs a lack of care or experience on the part of the developer.

The bare-bones design has some real drawbacks, too. It's difficult to tell which network you're connected to, for example. NordVPN, on the other hand, has an excellent design that's very user friendly and approachable. NordVPN also doesn't skimp on the features, despite its glimmering chrome, and I'd really like to see Private Internet Access make a more concerted effort to spruce up its apps across the board. While you can configure Private Internet Access to connect automatically at launch or when you log in, that's the most control you have.

True, you can turn on the kill switch, but other VPN apps allow you to have the VPN automatically switch on when you connect to unprotected or unfamiliar networks.

Most VPN users will find themselves blocked off from some streaming services. That might not be true for you by the time you read this review, however, as VPN services and Netflix are locked in a cat-and-mouse struggle. Regardless of the service you use, you generally see an increase in latency and a decrease in internet speeds. There are no in-app purchases or other pop-ups.

Users can likewise experience an unlimited amount of bandwidth and up to five different devices are able to be connected at the same time.
