I tried a demo of the VueScan drivers but they seemed quite slow, a bit klunky-looking, and very difficult to control and configure - I couldn't figure out what was happening half the time so gave up on them pretty fast. The trial version of Vuescan worked immediately, but the color balance was terrible on a couple slides with color casts, couldn't make it right. I bought it anyway, the Professional version, because the blurb promised better color with that version.

It immediately did exactly what I was looking for the color became correct automatically , so I'm satisfied with my purchase. However, I can't believe the half-price "regular" version would satisfy anybody except those with perfect slides and negatives.

I have only a very short experience so far, of course. Hope I don't have to argue with Ed Hamrick if he's as grouchy as you say, but so far, so good. The Software may or may not work as stated on the website. There is no refund. Ed Hamrick is very grouchy and will undoubtedly insult you, further aggravating your dissatisfaction. You would then resort to a credit card dispute, which depending on your credit card company can be either a phone call or not worth the work involved. If Vuescan DOES work, you should be aware it is written entirely in Java, therefore it is nonstandard, ugly and jerky running.

It does however usually work, and is a very powerful application especially for batch scanning.

I've been a bit retarded, in that I create a standard folder then scan to that. Later I'll run GC through that folder and make any needed adjustments to the scans. Since I'm in that habit, I'm likely to continue doing it that way.

Just be careful with your gear and it will last long enough. I've found that the 'Auto Levels' option in CG works remarkably well on images that look a bit faded.
