Hmmm, I had that problem as well. I stated that at the end of my article. Photo Booth can't render the effects properly if you add all of them at once. You need to add them one set at a time and try browsing through the effects with the arrows, avoid clicking the squares. Same here. When you click on the next box for effects it crashes. Try searching in the user level Library Compositions folder. If the effect doesn't come with an installer, place it into the Compositions folder like so: I wan't photo booth!!!

The more light you have on the subject you , the better. The more you can increase the contrast between the subject and the background, the better. When you initiate the effect, a map is made of the background. That map is then subtracted from the resultant video, and anything that differs from the map is included in the resultant video. If the subject is wearing a shirt for example that is the same color as a part of the background, the shirt will "disappear" when it moves into the same-colored area of the map. Again, lighting may be critical here, as more light increases the contrast between similar colors.

Whatever you do, do not move the camera once the map has been made of the background. Doing so will shift the background relative to the map, causing portion of the background at the very least to become visible. Based on the description of your results, this is in fact what is happening in your case. I have found the background effects to be quite robust, given adherence to the above guidelines.
