The Imagemixer 3 software that your camera came with is supposed to let you basically do the same things, but doesn't work on Mac. I was recently given a Canon HF which came with the usual Windows image maker discs but no mac discs: I plugged it in, opened iMovie09 and hey presto, iMovie found it and gave me the option of downloading the video clips. It does work and I hope thats the cheapest way for people to sort out this Canon defect. I will assume that Canon is assuming that their bundled software is no better than what Apple offers so why bother providing it for Mac users. That's why you have to pay for it, if you want to use it.
