However, sometimes the sensor failed to recognise when a digital audio device had been unplugged and so the audio output remained locked on digital output, with no way to change it. With no digital audio output connected, there is no way to change the volume or hear sound. The solution in that case is to plug the cable back in to the socket and remove it again.

Try blowing on it to remove any dust. Put the swab into the headphone jack and clean it, wiping away as much of the link as possible. Your Mac can play audio wirelessly via Bluetooth, so if you have Bluetooth speakers or headphones, you can use those to listen to music, or anything else on your Mac.
