The program using many different styles of learning, sight, hearing, typing written , and so fourth. I did have a very small amount of Spanish vocabulary built up, such as one word answers, but I believe someone with absolutely no Spanish vocabulary could use this program and be successful.

I'm not done with the first Level yet, but am already excited with my results. The only con i would say this product has, is that the headset it comes with is a little cheap. Other than that, 5 star program. Top critical review. It has been impossible to keep this running on my Mac for more than one day. I continually get a fatal error and the only cure is to delete and reload the software.

The first time my computer crashed, I called the company to get another seat I had it installed on my husband's computer too in case he was using my laptop - he has a desktop. We wouldn't have been able to get it back, except that my husband has a nearly photographic memory and remembered his old credit card number that he used to buy the program for me for Christmas.

He had to tell the RS support where he bought it exactly, the exact date, and the exact credit card number. That's way too difficult for most people. I am now unable to install my Level 3 CD. I have now been on the phone and on hold for 52 minutes. The first person I talked to couldn't help me, and transferred me to technical support, which is now transferring me to technical support 2!! I've never had such terrible customer support experiences with any other product. There was a problem loading comments right now.

Rosetta Stone language courses are about as impressive as computer based courses can get. These are NOT the kind of course you purchase if you want to learn a couple of phrases for your upcoming vacation, instead - they are what you buy if you want to become as close to fluent as you can possibly get.

I've used several of these in the past to learn German and French so was very interested to try out these new versions. The version I'm reviewing here is for the mid-level 1,2,3 package - which includes levels 1,2 and 3. In addition to computer based training, V4 also delivers online training with native speakers and a form of social networking, which helps complete the immersion factor.

The online portion included provides access for 12 months, after that you'll either be done learning, or you'll need to purchase an extension. Lessons are extremely well organized, and you are led through the courses at your own pace. One of the best features of the packages is the voice recognition. This is important, because when you are learning a new language, it is just you and the computer, so you need something to check your progress.

Included in the box is a good quality headset, and I found that it picked up my voice and pronunciation quite well.

Because this is such an extensive course, I've only made it into level one, but I'm already more confident at feeling I'll accomplish what I set out to do - learn Spanish. This of course brings up an important point - you WILL need to be committed to this. You'll fail if you only spend 10 minutes a day at this. You really need to set some time aside each day, and keep up your training.

When I skipped a five day period, it took some catching up to pick up where I left off. The software is extremely comprehensive - in addition to the training, you also get the online portion and even some basic language skill games. Then there is of course the price - this is not a cheap language course.

But once again - don't compare this to a page language course book at the local book shop - this is way, way more valuable.

Just think - in under a year, you could master the art of basic communication skills in 4 or 5 different languages. In my opinion, this program is just flashcards plus someone saying the words. Anyone who thinks this is "total immersion" doesn't know the meaning of that phrase. Total immersion means you are living in an environment where you only hear the language you are trying to learn.
