I have to add that my DVD burning needs include compression of video, splitting into multi-section disks, etc. I wonder if that script can simply be edited to achieve what you want What's a good way to get you like a 12GB file if I can get this thing created and zipped up? Apparently it worked, using 5.

Make exact backup copies of your DVDs

PM me with somewhere I can send a file, or with your address and I'll mail you the stick. I'd appreciate if someone can satisfy my curiosity by explaining how asbath 's IT desktop services folks could "do a Macrium backup, and just restore that backup image to all Macs that need to be imaged.

All that in order to avoid polluting the IT desktop services space with a resident Mac, which they would use very seldom since it sounds as if—like many PC-oriented in-house support departments—they have a "we don't touch Macs if at all possible" policy. The alternative would be that asbath 's IT desktop services folks would use their "really good screwdriver we use all the time" to remove a disk drive from any Mac that needed to be image-overlaid, pop the drive into a housing, and then attach the housing to a PC running Macrium—after which they would re-install the image-overlaid drive into the Mac it came from.

That seems like a fair amount of effort, especially if the Mac that needed to be image-overlaid was a laptop. In any case it sounds as if, in order to install Mavericks from that USB stick, asbath will have to remove the RAID card and the first of the spanned disks. DavidH wrote: You don't use a PC to run Macrium Reflect. The portable version of Macrium doesn't care what file system is on an HDD it's going to clone, because as I mentioned, it operates at the block level, not the file level.

It doesn't copy files, it copies the contents of the drive bit by bit. It will only work on a Mac that supports EFI, which is pretty much any Mac made in the last 10 years. Thanks, hestermofet. I guess I didn't pick up on that capability from this Wikipedia article.

Maybe the problem is that preceding posts in this thread simply referred to "Macrium", rather than "Macrium Reflect". Returning to my original issue: Many thanks to Jehos and Ventriloquist for their help in providing installer images, and everyone else for the instructions on how to upgrade to the latest-ish versions of OS X. Originally I tried jumping straight to Mavericks via Jehos' zipped file. However, being on a Windows machine, some issues arose with simply not seeing all of the files in the zip file, and therefore unable to copy some of the files over to a USB stick.

As well, I wasn't able to get TransMac to work.

I suspect it's simply my current ignorant state of Mac OS workings that was the problem, not the zipped installer USB image. From there I was able to install a fresh copy of Mountain Lion! With that up and running, I was able to see that the RAID card is basically shot - the RAID utility says that the battery is shot and drive 1 is dead not actually dead, but more warnings than you can shake a stick at.

No matter, I'm not going to use this thing in RAID anyways, and it would explain why the system couldn't boot when I first received it. From there, I poked around and played with OS X, and eventually came across an Apple support article showing you how to get El Capitan upgrade: So it's still available for all, just not available by searching the App Store.

A few hours later, after downloading the El Capitan upgrade, I'm fully upgraded and now on El Capitan!

They eventually got rid of it for reasons. So might as well be rid of it as well. Handy that OS X deletes the upgrade files after you've successfully upgraded. Stupid that it automatically deletes said files, in the case that you'd like to create a bootable media as a a backup. They should prompt you after your first boot up if you'd like to keep or delete the upgrade files, not just wipe them out without warning.

Glad to hear that everything is working out. Yeah, that's an issue that can be quite bothersome for inexperienced users. Most Mac folks have now learned that you have to copy the installer to another device or location other than the Applications folder before you use it if you want to save it for your archives. That's a bit of knowledge that you can put in the memory bank for future use. Ingrained in memory now Next pain point: Took me the second half of the afternoon to figure out that cable that plugs into the PCI card isn't a PCI power cable: I yanked the drives, dropped them into my USB hard drive dock and reformatted them multiple times.

I eventually ran out of patience as I had other things to do this afternoon. Then over dinner I did further reading on the RAID card and learned that there's the iPass cable that needs to be moved from the RAID card to the logic board, otherwise those 4 drive bays are basically just mothballed drive hangars. I'm going to give this another go later this week when I have more time.
