Sounds like it has been put into Apple Startup mode which is where you see the first Welcome screen.

Not sure about the missing countries. You could try resetting the Apple Startup mode by removing the following file while in single-user mode. You can manually remove the login. It will create a new one and prompt you to create a password for it.

Ok, I only understood about half of that. Spelling counts. The file you are loading ends in. Always enjoy the thank yous. Watch the spaces, they will bite you. I have a mac with the mac 9. No se. Should if the computer is on Mac OS X I found another trick just type: Hit Enter after retyping new password and then type: Double-check the spelling of the command you typed.

My old mac running on snow leopard I got to step 8, and after that, the first time I wrote sudo reboot. It shut down perfectly, then started up again in what looked like recovery mode, and then it shut down again. I can get in to single user mode, so I tried the whole procedure again, but with the same result.
