As for your issues opening files in Word, did you make sure that your version of Word was compatible with El Capitan before you upgraded? That should always be the first thing you do, after backing up your system, before upgrading. Also, is the file name of what you're trying to open acceptable? Meaning, does it fit Word's rules for what file names are supposed to contain?

    Thanks for your help Pinkstones. I took care of the hard drive. So what can I do to fix this? Can I undo the update or do I have to purchase a newer version of words or something?
